380 Spadina Avenue

In May 2025, KMCLT successfully acquired our second building in Kensington Market at 380 Spadina Ave. Our second property is a 3-storey mixed-use building with two large residential units and one commercial space.

KMCLT launched the Kensington Community Bond Campaign the year prior and set out to create an acquisition fund to support the purchase of our next building. We raised $1M within 8 months and had nearly 170 investors purchase a bond. With these funds, we were able to secure a sizeable donation and leverage funding from the City of Toronto to complete the purchase. We did not take out a mortgage from a bank to finance this purchase, meaning this building is community-financed and community-owned!

Continuing with our commitment to affordability and anti-displacement, residential tenants of this building received a rent reduction, and our commercial tenant will be able to continue to operate in the space without the fear of eviction.

Land AcknowledgementWe, as members of the Kensington Market Community Land Trust, are aware that we are a settler organization. Kensington Market sits in the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit (an Anishnaabe people), the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Wendat and Petun Nations, land which is now home to many First Nations, Inuit and Métis.

This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon wampum belt covenant, an agreement by the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee to share resources equally and peaceably. It is also covered by Treaty 13 with the Mississaugas of the Credit. As a settler organization concerned with land ownership, we acknowledge that we have broken the treaties. Our work for the well-being of this land must include accountability to our relatives.
